I may not be speaking for everyone, but I am definitely speaking for myself when I say there is something undeniably spiritual about seeing an amazing band live. It just seems like every nerve ending reacts to hearing and feeling the sonic resonance of the music as it travels through the air. And sometimes there are other elements, which are completely out of your control, which can add to one another to make the show even better, whether it’s drugs or an electrical storm. Or even better, taking drugs at an outdoor show during an electrical storm. As scary as that may sound, you pair that up with one of your favorite bands putting on one of the best shows of their lives, and you have all the elements of a life-changing moment. The following are six shows I saw, and the circumstances in which I saw them under, that forever etched them into the wall of my subconscious.
Alright, this is not a movie, so I changed the name of the column this week. And I may do this more and more, actually, because it is kind of awesome. This is the full Nine Inch Nail set from the ill-fated Woodstock 1994. The reason I am posting this as oppose to a “movie” this weekend is because right now, as you read this, I am on my way home from Maryland, from VIP’ing the Virgin Mobile Freefest all weekend. Virgin was kind enough to fly me out for Unreality, put me up, and treat me far more importantly than I have ever been treated before. It is actually ironic, because I have been a Virgin Mobile customer for a decade now (thirty five dollars a month is a f*cking sweet deal, anyway you cut it, ESPECIALLY now that they have iPhones) so I will be talking about the show and the V.I.P treatment a bit this week, and I figured posting an amazing show from an amazing band would set the tone for that. And what better band to represent badass live music than Nine Inch Nails?
Sensual songs about sex can be both sweet and surreal. Switching from sublime to serene in seconds. Sometimes, a sexy song can swelter, filling the room with sweet swells of sonic satisfaction. Sometimes, someone can sense something sexy and says supe….ah, fuck this. I need to stop with the S’s. That was stupid, sad, and silly. Here, six songs to fuck to. Simple as that. Shit, somebody stop me!
